Drops of Good

Philadelphia was one of ten cities that were invited to compete for a $50,000 grant from Maxwell House through its Drops of Good on-line voting campaign. This grant will enable RTP to spruce up the Community Education Center (CEC) in West Philadelphia. You can read the official press release here.

Thank you for supporting RTP, the CEC, and Philadelphia by voting for "Community Education Center" on line every day between April 13 and June 17.

Located in West Philadelphia, the Community Education Center has been a cultural hub on Lancaster Avenue for many years. It is a community-based arts and education center whose mission is to strengthen the sense of shared community among people of different backgrounds and cultures through the arts. Accordingly, its mission is very much aligned with RTP’s goals to revitalize communities in need. To build well-rounded, creative, positive individuals, and stronger communities, access to and engagement in the arts is critical.

For many, the CEC is their only exposure or access to arts programming, including dance, theatre and music. CEC is poised to make greater and more meaningful contributions to the community, yet it is limited by financial resources. This project would reduce key limitations so the CEC can continue to have a significant impact on the lives of those who use the center directly, and the surrounding community.

The CEC provides training in dance, music, and theatre; assists artists with production, promotion, rehearsal and audition space; and offers artist-in-residence, youth training and support programs to the community.

RTP's work there will include:

  • Coating the roof to protect the integrity of this old, spacious building
  • Creating a Box Office to professionalize this important part of CEC's operations and interaction with the public
  • Sanding and resurfacing the dance floor – the heart of CEC's activities
  • Sprucing up – painting and doing minor repairs throughout the building
