Who We Are
"I didn't realize that there are programs and people who really care and are willing to extend a helping hand. I met some wonderful people who worked tirelessly and enjoyed the work they were doing."
Homeowner Sylvia Wilford

THE MISSION

To prevent homelessness by partnering with the community to rehabilitate the homes of elderly, disabled, and low-income homeowners so that they may continue to live in warmth, safety, and independence.

An Urban Legend

RTP is a local, independent affiliate of Rebuilding Together, Inc., a national movement of volunteers acting as community builders in order to prevent homelessness.  RTP started in 1988 when Robert Bellinger and several fellow graduate students at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania took up the gauntlet and proved that business students cared enough about the West Philadelphia community to make a difference.

RTP’s Geographic Focus

Initially, RTP focused on West Philadelphia, but quickly expanded operations to serve homeowners in North Philadelphia.  Throughout its 20-year existence RTP volunteers have reached into South Philadelphia; the Frankford section of the City; Coatesville in Chester County; Chester in Delaware County; and Norristown, Glenside, and Roslyn in Montgomery County.

RTP’s IMPACT

RTP volunteers achieved the following cumulative statistics after spring 2008:

  • 829 homeowners served
  • 35 community agencies served
  • 10 vacant lots and parks restored
  • 24,230 volunteers enlisted
  • 324,500 volunteer hours contributed
  • $18,766,500 worth of repairs provided
