Board Member Spotlight - Kathleen Maloney

Kathleen Maloney has been a dedicated and valuable member of our family of [Re]Builders for over 20 years! Being involved in many RTP activities and projects as a volunteer and a Board Member, there’s no doubt that she is an integral part of the RTP community.

Kathleen was introduced to RTP when she first moved from New Jersey. A colleague of hers had volunteered with Christmas in April in Baltimore and she was then introduced to the Philadelphia affiliate (RTP was formerly known as Christmas in April). In sharing what attracted her to RTP originally, Kathleen explains, “I believed in the mission to ensure that every homeowner can live in a safe and healthy home.” She adds that, “I most like meeting the homeowners and learning about them, their families and their histories.”

When asked what her favorite thing about the RTP community is, she circles back to what inspired her to get involved: “I really enjoy seeing the homeowners’ and their families’ reactions when the tools and materials are moved, the furniture and belongings are put back in place, the work is complete and they can see the results. The emotions are raw and true, and they are beyond happy. I think that we can lose sight of how much of an impact our work has and it’s great to see them so happy.”

In 2013, Kathleen joined the RTP Board of Directors. At that time, she had close to 20 years of RTP volunteering under her belt and she wanted another way to strengthen her bond with the RTP community. “I wanted to get more involved with the organization and wanted to get others involved as well and thought being on the Board would give me that opportunity. I enjoy being able to have an ability to reach out to others, to teach them about RTP and how together we can continue to help Philadelphia’s homeowners who may not have any other resources available to them.”

Since she first became involved with RTP, Kathleen has volunteered at numerous Block Builds and MLK Service Days, participated in fundraising activities such as Run to Rebuild and the Dragon Boat Festival; and received the 2012 Lifetime Contribution Volunteer Award. She shared that receiving the 2015 Board Member of the Year Award may be her proudest moment, “because it was awarded to me by the other Board and Staff members who are also very dedicated and committed to RTP.”

After six years on the Board, Kathleen is taking a break. When asked what she will miss most about being on the Board, she states “I’ll miss it so much that my leaving the Board is only temporary. I’ll be back in a year!”

RTP is thankful to Kathleen for all she has done and looks forward to the renewed energy she will bring in the future.

Thank you, Kathleen!
