Falls Prevention Awareness Day - September 23, 2019

According to the National Council of Aging, 1 in 4 Americans who are 65 and older fall each year. RTP’s mission is to provide safe, healthy and every-efficient home repairs and accommodations. This includes repairs that aid in preventing falls and injuries, such as: securing loose thresholds, installing grab bars, removing tripping hazards from main rooms and stairs, ensuring handrails are secure, and more.

Through a partnership between RTP and Salus University’s Occupational Therapy (OT) program, students are able to take what they learned in the classroom and apply it to experiences in the field by performing home safety evaluations, as well as providing recommendations and modifications utilizing proper materials and equipment.

Recommendations provided by the students are “aimed at reducing the risk of falls, helping homeowners reduce fatigue, and generally improve a homeowner’s ability to safely perform daily activities within their home environment.” Materials used for the home modifications may include shower chairs, detachable shower heads, non-slip shower mats, hand-held reaching aids, and motion-sensor lighting.

To date, OT students have completed 22 home safety assessments in Parkside, Haddington and West Oak Lane. They also visit homeowners to deliver handouts about community resources, fall prevention and home safety. Click here to learn more about Salus OT students’ work with RTP.
